I'm going to be completely honest with you, the best part about my job is the children. Some say I have a weird connection to them, but children seem to love me. Some think of getting their family photos taken and the first thing I'm sure they think to themselves is, "oh I hope so and so cooperates" or "I hope they smile!" or aren't miserable. As a mother I can relate you to 100%. If you've been photographed by me in the past, I hope that fear or that thought has disappeared even if it's only a little bit!
My first job as a photographer, before the session even starts is to figure out the best way to interact with your child and make them smile at least once BEFORE your session even starts... even if that means I sit on the ground and talk about things that they like, or TV shows that interest them. Than as your session begins, along with posing, and making sure everyone is comfortable making you and your children laugh is my number 1 priority. Now not every trick I have will always work.. there are some things you can do to help me out if needed..
If you child has a favorite snack, or candy please feel free to bring it along or make me aware, and I would be happy to bring something for them! Or if they have a favorite toy, that fits in their pocket, sometimes just having that toy makes them feel a little more comfortable. Please keep in mind, some children are just shy and any human interaction is extremely scary for them. If you child is not smiling in your photos, That is OKAY! That is their personality and where they were at that age. There's always next time!!!
Prepping for you session is extremely important. Talk to them about Me, Amber! Mention my name and let them know that I will be taking their photos and we are going to have lots of fun. Getting them excited prior to your session, even if they are nervous when we first start, they may warm up faster knowing that it is okay. Practice smiling or "laughing" on cue. My 4 year old has TERRIBLE cheese face and looks constipated... so naturally I try to make them laugh during their session. Also encourage them to help choose a pose they want to do! It is always fun to incorporate their ideas, and a lot of times it ends up being one of the cutest photos!
What to expect during your session OTHER than me making your child laugh, or me making crazy noises...
Normally we would start with family photos... to help warm the kids up, they always feel more comfortable with you there! Than we would do Mom with kids, Dad with kids ect. and gradually put children down or alone and do them together and individually (depending on your family of course!) With me, I will do everything I can to get every break down possible for you! Don't forget.. Pets are your family too! and they are always welcome:)
I am excited to get to meet you and your family and help create memories that will last a lifetime... keep an eye out for my upcoming entry on why extended family portraits are just as important as immediate family!
XOXO
